    Conditioning oil travels down to roughly this depth, and no further.

    Colour never reaches this layer. That is why a match is approximate.

The shelf is the last step, not the first

Buying leather care without knowing the leather is how suede gets oiled and patent leather gets conditioned. Both are permanent. So the order here runs the other way round.

Dry work boot, four applications a week apart

Deep clean, then restoring oil in thin passes over three weeks, then a balm. The cracking across the flex crease is still findable up close — oil restores flexibility, it does not close a broken grain.

A water drop, a look at the grain and a glance at the cut edge will tell you which of the six you are holding within a minute. Guessing is what puts oil on suede, so the diagnosis sends you here rather than making an assumption on your behalf.
