Six magnified leather swatches in a grid, each with a water droplet behaving differently — beading on the sealed surfaces, half absorbed on the napped ones, fully absorbed on the open-pored one — and a small cutaway edge drawn beneath each swatch.
  1. Der Wassertropfen

Put one drop of water on a hidden spot. Beads and sits on top for a minute or more: a sealed, pigmented or lacquered surface. Darkens slowly over ten to thirty seconds: a lightly finished leather. Vanishes into the surface within a couple of seconds and leaves a dark ring: aniline. Wipe it off afterwards either way.

  2. Die Narbe unter Licht

Hold the piece at a shallow angle to a window. Irregular pores, healed scars and small variations mean a natural grain. A pattern that repeats identically every few centimetres is an embossed finish, and almost always means synthetic or heavily corrected leather.

  3. Die Schnittkante

Find a cut edge — inside a strap hole, under a flap, at a seam. Real leather shows a fibrous, slightly fuzzy cross-section in one continuous material. Synthetic shows a clean polymer skin sitting on top of a woven textile backing, and the two layers are visibly separate.

Die sechs Typen im Vergleich

  • Glattleder

    Smooth leather
    Woran Sie es erkennen
Closed, even surface with a soft sheen. A water drop beads and takes a while to darken. The grain is natural but usually lightly corrected.
    Was darauf darf
Takes cleaners, balms, waxes and colour. The most forgiving of the six.
  • Nubuk

    Nubuck
    Woran Sie es erkennen
A short, dry, velvety nap on the grain side — sanded, not split. Fingertips leave a faint darker track. Water darkens it immediately and unevenly.
    Was darauf darf
Never any oil, cream, balm or wax. Brush, eraser, dedicated cleaner and a fine repellent mist.
  • Veloursleder

    Suede
    Woran Sie es erkennen
A longer, softer nap on the flesh side, with a clear two-tone shift when you brush it one way and then the other. No sheen at all.
    Was darauf darf
Same rule as nubuck: nothing greasy, ever. Mechanical care plus a napped-leather cleaner.
  • Anilinleder

    Aniline leather
    Woran Sie es erkennen
Open-pored and warm to the touch. A water drop is absorbed within a second or two and leaves a dark ring that fades over hours. Every mark shows.
    Was darauf darf
Only thin, low-fat milks, applied panel by panel. Patch test judged after 24 hours, always.
  • Lackleder

    Patent leather
    Woran Sie es erkennen
Mirror gloss, fully sealed, feels like a hard film. A water drop sits on top indefinitely. Creases show as pale lines rather than as folds.
    Was darauf darf
A barely damp cloth and an immediate dry buff. Nothing else — no conditioner can enter a lacquer film.
  • Kunstleder

    Synthetic leather
    Woran Sie es erkennen
Perfectly uniform embossing, cool to the touch, and a cut edge that reveals a textile backing under a polymer skin.
    Was darauf darf
Cleaning and a surface barrier. Conditioners cannot enter it and can soften the coating over time.
